Surya, Hansi

Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana

A very serene and delightfully embellished standing image of Surya, the sun god, is depicted with a pedestal flanked by attendants. The Surya two-handed deity holds full-blown lotuses in both hands, adorned with simple yet delightful ornamentation including kirithamukutha (crown), karnakundala (earrings), necklaces, vaijantimala (garland), and katibanda (waistband). He is flanked on either side by two standing male figures holding a bow and arrow, two small standing figures, and two ladies holding flowers and full-blown lotuses. Additionally, 'Bhudevi' is depicted below the Surya sculpture. This represents the personification of Surya and his worship as a deity, often alongside other deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, Shakti, and Ganesha.
