Shiva, Prachin Shiva Temple (Pehowa)

Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana

This sculpture depicts the Hindu deity Shiva seated on his vahana, the bull Nandi, while holding his associated ayudha- the Trident (Trisula). Details of jewellery on his torso are also visible- notably in his necklace and ornamental girdle. He is also shown wearing a yajnopavita, holding a pot (kalasa). His hair is arranged as a Jata-Mukuta, and he is shown wearing earrings. Notably, this depiction does not show Shiva as Tryambakadeva (One with the Three Eyes) or as Vibhutibhusana (Ash-covered Deity), thus emphasising his divine element while underscoring his destructive nature. His hand is extended in the abhayamudra, granting blessings. The idol is also flanked by pillars on both sides- which remain simple and uncarved for the most part.
