Sati Stone, Sunam (Punjab)

Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana

The relief features a central figure of a goddess mounted on a tiger, flanked by depictions of the sun and moon. This imagery, rich in symbolism, is closely associated with Hindu mythology. The goddess, likely Durga, epitomizes strength and valor frequently portrayed riding a tiger or lion. This symbolizes her dominion over all creation and her role as a warrior goddess. In relief, she holds a khadga and a sword in her hands. The khadga represents liberation, cutting away attachments and obstacles binding souls to the cycle of birth and death. The sword is a tool for upholding dharma (cosmic law and order) and vanquish evil. The sun (on the left) and moon (on the right) engraved beside the goddess represent cosmic order and balance. In Hindu mythology, the sun (Surya) symbolizes light, life, and truth, while the moon (Chandra) signifies time, rhythm, and emotions, emphasizing Durga’s universal power and cosmic dominion.
