A architectural member of pIan Indian temple construction, a pillar base, or adhisthana, serves as the foundational support for columns, giving stability and supporting structural weight. It is often made of stone and comes in a variety of shapes, including circular, square, and octagonal. These bases are generally beautifully carved with designs such as floral patterns and mythological characters, adding to the temple’s visual appeal. Dravidian bases are more intricate, whilst Nagara bases are simpler yet still complex. Functionally, the pillar base lifts the column to protect it from damage while also integrating artistically with the temple, ensuring structural continuity and visual harmony pillar base.
