Rissala Collection
The copper statue illustrates Lord Nataraja, characterized by a slightly bent right leg that serves as a stabilizing element for his dynamic dance. He is depicted dancing atop Apasmara, a demon positioned on an inverted lotus, which rests on a rectangular base. This representation of Apasmara signifies the vices of ignorance and ego, while the third eye on Shiva's forehead symbolizes profound wisdom. In his rear left hand, he holds the Damaru, representing Srishti (creation), and in his rear right hand, he carries a fire bowl that signifies Samhara (destruction). The Abhaya Mudra is displayed in his right forehand, while his left forehand points downward with the palm facing inward, indicating concealment and his role as the creator of Maya. The flowing hair of Lord Shiva conveys the intensity of his dance, and the river goddess Ganges is entwined in his hair, symbolizing the calming of the river for the renewal of life.
