Mithuna couple

Rissala Collection

This stone sculpture depicts a Mithuna couple engaged in a dynamic pose, likely created during the Eastern Ganga Dynasty of ancient India, and draws inspiration from the themes presented in the Kama Sutra. In this representation, the male figure is positioned semi-seated, while the female figure straddles him, her legs positioned on either side of his thighs. This arrangement is a variation of the position known as piditankam aliganam, although in this instance, the woman faces the man rather than turning away. The couple illustrated is thought to embody various interpretations, ranging from a straightforward celebration of sensual pleasures to a more profound metaphorical representation of the human soul's yearning for unity with the divine.
