Miracle of Rajagriha: Subjugation of Nalagiri

Indian Museum

According to the legends, Devadatta had gained considerable influence over Ajatasatru, the king of Magadha and made a league with the latter and plotted to kill Buddha. On one of these occasions when Buddha was walking through the narrow streets of Rajagriha, the capital of Magadha, Devadatta persuaded the keeper of a mad elephant to let it loose in the street through which Buddha was passing, with the intention of trampling Buddha. But this mad elephant, Nalagiri or Ratnapala charged Buddha; but when it came near the Master, it became subdued by the Majesty of the latter’s appearance and knelt down in homage to him. Later Ajatasatru became remorseful and finally became his disciple.
