Rissala Collection
This figure depicts the Jaina tirthankara, Mahavira, seated in a meditative posture on a plain pedestal. He is shown surrounded by lions, elephants, even the goddess Lakshmi- all crouching, seemingly in reverence. More symbols are also found- in the form of flanking chauri-bearers, a trilinear umbrella above Mahavira, the use of cymbals as well as the sala tree motif. A notable aspect is also the solar prabhamandala behind Mahavira, signifying his authority and stature in spiritual terms. Also impressively included between the attendants and the decorative foliage are the remaining twenty-three Jaina tirthankaras that preceded Mahavira- all seated in meditation. The entire sculpture is placed on a larger decorative plinth, with animal carvings. Also notable are the turrets and arch decor on top- displaying fine craftsmanship.
