Lakshmi

National Museum

This image of the Puranic goddess Lakshmi depicts her seated on a rectangular pedestal with her legs apart, composed and calm. Holding lotuses as ayudhas, she is also shown to wear extensive jewellery- as the goddess of material abundance and wealth- with a crown (mukuta), circular earrings, necklace, yajnopavita, and a girdle on her waist for securing her garments. The detailing on the same is incredible- from individual segments on the jewellery to the folds of her clothes. In Puranic scripture, Lakshmi is shown to be the consort of Vishnu, and a deity protecting her devotees from ill-health and adversity by showering them with abundance.
