Horse Armour Mask

Rissala Collection

This iron armour mask, or shaffron, for a horse, was a utilitarian object used to guard the horse's head in the battlefield. Additional protective gear for the ears and eyelids are also present. One also observes buckles on the interior, which would have been used to fasten the armour onto the horse's head. This formed a key part of the horse's armour, in addition to other equipment like blinders. Though much decoration is not present due to the object's utilitarian nature, one still finds a raised layer around the horse's forehead, along with a decorative beaded boundary along the entire mask.
