Hanumana

Rissala Collection

This sculpture shows the deity Hanumana seated in the posture of the lotus (padmasana) upon a lotus pedestal. His hands are shown holding his mace (gada) in one hand, while posturing the abhayamudra in the other. His torso shows finely carved accessories with detailing- present in the garland (hara), armbands, as well as his yajnopavita. He is also crowned with a decorative crown- kritamukuta. His body posture also gestures a degree of discipline and penance, while the prabhamandala behind him has his tail arched over. Designed in the Chola style, it depicts a high degree of craftsmanship and intricate artistry, revealing heavy symbolism as well.
