Ganesha

Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana

While the condition of the artefact hinders any thorough analysis, this sculpture depicts the Hindu deity Ganesha- characterised by the recognisable elephant head and four-headed figure. Conjecture leads one to theorise that among his ayudhas would have been a modaka, a rosary, a weapon (perhaps an angusam or a noose), and the abhayamudra gesture. While the ayudhas are not visible distinctly, his posture is also unique- instead of the regular seated lalitasana, he is seated cross-legged upon the lotus pedestal. His vahana, the mouse Mushaka is also vaguely recognisable.
