Gajlaxmi and kuber

Jahaj kothi, Hisar

This sculpture dates back to the 9th to 10th century AD and features the figures of Gaja Laxmi and Kubera. In Hindu mythology, Kubera is recognized as the deity of wealth. In this representation, both Gaja Laxmi and Kubera are depicted in the Sukhasana posture. Gaja Laxmi is positioned on a lotus pedestal, while Kubera is seated on a more modest pedestal. She is illustrated receiving water from jars held by two elephants flanking her; one elephant is notably prominent, although it’s trunk is broken, while the other elephant is missing. On both sides of Gaja Laxmi, two attendant figures are presented in a tribhanga posture. Kubera is depicted with a bowl of jewels in his left hand, while his other hand may be holding a mace. On the left side of the attendant lady there is a hand notably raised, holding a bowl filled with laddu or modak, which may suggest a connection to Ganesha.
