Rissala Collection
This ivory flask is an excellent specimen of skilled craftsmanship. The surface of the flask is detailed in a chevron pattern extending from the lid to the curved end, with dotting as well. The end of the flask curves into the exterior, and is bound by a band of decorative carving. The same carving can be seen at the lid, albeit with some wear and tear. The top of the lid also has a beautifully carved floral motif- of two twelve-petalled flowers blooming. Emerging from the middle of this is a ribbed protruberance, topped by a flowerbud-like structure. Connecting from this is a metal chain, tying the lid to the flask itself. The detailing of the work and the extensive use of ivory indicates that this object was either a luxury good or a ritual object, not a utilitarian one.
