Durga, Murad Jayantipur

Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana

Durga, a major Hindu goddess, embodies maternity, strength, protection, and the defeat of evil. Depicted with eight or ten arms, each holding a different weapon or symbol, she represents omnipresence and her ability to protect devotees from all directions. Her weapons include the trishul, khadga, bow and arrow, shankha, chakra, vajra, gada, and padma. Durga is often shown vanquishing the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and her role in dispelling ignorance and darkness. The lion/tiger she rides represents her protection of the pious and mastery over animalistic impulses. Lavishly adorned with a headgear and jewelry.
