Door Lintel

Rissala Collection

The door lintel is shown in the butted top section. generally found on the top lintel of congregation hall. The lintel is broken in two parts. This panel shows Garuda, the carrier of Vishnu subduing a naga, where seven flying female vidyadhari figures in high relief, each one holding a garland in her hand, are flying towards it to honour Garuda's valour. On either ends of the lintel, there are two female attendants holding fly-whisks (chauris), indicating their role as attendants in a divine context. A flying apsara is slightly broken, but facial features are carved expressively. The flying apsaras on the side are greatly waterworn, suggesting significant age and exposure to the elements. The intricate details reflect the high level of craftsmanship and cultural significance of the artefact.
