Rissala Collection
This sculpture of the Buddha's head, judging by the marks on the neck, was likely a part of a larger sculpture. Carving on all sides indicates that the sculpture was also likely freestanding. In terms of detail, the sculpture portrays a calm expression on the Buddha, seemingly with closed eyes in meditation. What is notable here is that the depiction also corresponds with the scriptural description of the Buddha- in accordance with the thirty-two mahapurusa laksanas. One can note the large ears, curls on the hair, as well as the fleshy protruberance on the top of his head- all listed as marks of his greatness. The detail on his expression, hairstyle and features is impeccable.
