Agni

Bhima Devi Temple Site Museum, Pinjore

The sculpture depicts Agni with Vahana, Ram. All four hands are broken in this sculpture, thus ayudhas are not clear. Agni here is shown with a beard; elaborate hair style, jewellery and a vanamàlà (encircling body). It is a remarkable aspect that Agni is not worshipped anywhere except India. Rigveda, begins with a hymn to Agni and ends with a hymn to Agni. It is a known fact that next to Indra, Agni has the highest number of hymns. He is the messenger of the gods, as takes all offerings poured into the fire to the gods. Around the central figure, outside the pillared niche are visible traces of female attendants, Svaha and Svadha in lower portion and vyals, anthropomorphic beings and makara mukh in upper portion.
